Artists have a unique ability to bring people together, provoke change, and even heal communities in important ways. Transracial Journeys -- a non-profit that supports children and parents in families with transracially adopted children and works to promote racial justice -- invites young artists to share their artistic visions to help drive social change in its second annual art contest.

Who?  Elementary and secondary students age 18 and younger.

Submission Deadline:  April 20, 2018

How?

Art work must be submitted on paper, poster board or canvas (no larger than 22x28-inch), and may consist of any painting, drawing, or collage, using any medium (i.e., pastel, oil, pencil, watercolor, acrylic, pen & ink, charcoal, fabric, mixed media, etc.). Digital art and photography are not accepted. Only original artwork will be accepted. Text and words may be incorporated into the work, as long as they are either original, or properly & visibly cited/attributed to the original author in the work.

Prizes:

Cash prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place entries in the high school and middle school categories, and a gift card will be awarded for 1st place in the elementary school category:

Category A: Grades 10-12

First prize: $100, Second prize: $75, Third Prize $50

Category B: Grades 6-9

First prize: $75, Second prize: $50, Third Prize $25

Category C: Grades 1-5

First prize: $25 Gift Card

Guidelines:

Create a two-dimensional piece of art responding to the theme of Diversity, Race, and Social Justice in America, and keeping in mind the goals of promoting racial justice, community healing, and social change. Art work may approach the theme from a historical, biographical, personal, or abstract perspective, and may draw on subject matter of historical, political, literary, or contemporary significance.

Judging:

A panel of 3 judges will rate each submission for creativity, interpretation of the theme, as well as artistic skill and creative merit.

Winners will be announced at the Station Hope Family Weekend on May 5, 2018.

Display:

Winning artwork (contingent on space) will be displayed in public galleries following the contest. Details to be announced.

Other Information:

All submitted art work will become property of Transracial Journeys and will be considered as a donation to our fall fundraising auction. By submitting your art, you confirm that you understand that your art becomes the property of Transracial Journeys, and, whether a winning entry or not, it may be used by Transracial Journeys, in whole or in part, royalty free, in any printed or electronic media and in promotional materials, including fundraising and online publications.
