Blended Together on the Journey

 Ohio University | August 2, 2025 | 1:30–2:30 PM

Tickets: In-person $25 Virtual $10

Join us for a powerful preview of Blended Together at Together on the Journey Family Camp—a community moment centered on identity, hair care, and belonging, featuring Johnny Wright, April Dinwoodie and special guests. We’ll be hearing from transracially adopted persons on their hair and identity journey, and we’ll have a live “Wash Day” demo with Johnny Wright.

This live, in-person and livestreamed gathering marks the official preview of a first-of-its-kind community for individuals and families navigating the beautiful and complex realities of being mixed race or parenting across racial lines.

In addition to our traditional programming, we are excited to go deeper with a focus on hair, skin, and self-care as essential parts of identity, connection, and belonging.

For transracially adopted children and youth, learning to care for curly and coily hair, understanding melanin-rich skin, and embracing self-care are not just about routine—they are acts of self-love, cultural pride, and confidence-building.

Through these new offerings, we aim to blend self-care with cultural empowerment, ensuring that every child sees themselves reflected, valued, and celebrated inside and out.

Listen April and Johnny in this special July episode of Born in June, Raised in April: What Adoption Can Teach the World, we explore the beauty and complexity of belonging—and the deep yearning for the freedom to be fully ourselves. I’m joined by my dear friend and creative collaborator Johnny Wright as we share space and vision around a new offering we’re bringing into the world—one created especially with Black and Brown youth in mind, particularly those growing up in White families and communities.

This conversation is about more than programs or plans—it’s about culture, care, and connection. It’s about hair and history, family and identity, and the ways we can braid love, legacy, and liberation into how we show up for ourselves and for one another. As we prepare to introduce this work in community for the first time, we hope you’ll join us in dreaming of a world where everyone has the freedom to belong—and to be.
